Tryavna
Tryavna is a town in Gabrovo district, Central North Bulgaria. It is located 220km from Sofia, 22km from Gabrovo and 40km from Veliko Tarnovo. The first settlers in the area were the Thracians, and in the second half of the 12th century under the name “Turnava” the Bulgarian settlement appeared at the present place. Along with the three fortresses belonging to the fortified area – Boruna, Kuklata and Kaleto, it played an important role in the defense of the Second Bulgarian State. The oldest official information about Tryavna is from the time of the Ottoman rule – XV-XVI century. In the area of the present-day city, a population of the high-mountainous surrounding settlements served the roads through the mountains and guarded the passages. This gives the Tryavna residents tax privileges and complete freedom.

In the 18th and 19th centuries Tryavna became one of the leading cultural centers of Bulgaria, a center in which the legacy of the late Middle Ages was transformed in a manner in accordance with the new social and economic realities. Thus, over time, they began to call Tryavna “altan”, ie. gold. Among the masterpieces of the Tryavna architectural heritage are the Kalinchev House (1830), Dobreva (1834), Sergeev (1841), Raykova (1846), Kireva (1851) houses. The most typical and beautiful examples of the Tryavna house are Kalincheva and Raykova (cultural monuments of national importance).
In the center of Tryavna is located the only preserved Renaissance square in Bulgaria today, with its adjacent buildings. Unique with its urban planning solution, which allows the gathering of many people on different occasions. Almost all buildings surrounding the square have remarkable architectural value. Harmoniously connected to the environmental architecture and appearance of Tryavna is the vaulted stone bridge, built in 1844 – 1845. Together with the Clock Tower, it has become one of the symbols of the city. It adds extra charge to Tryavna’s unique atmosphere.
