A Brief History of Bulgaria

Bulgaria is one of the oldest countries in Europe and one of the few nations on the continent that has kept the same name since its founding in 681 AD. Located at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, the country has been shaped by Thracian tribes, powerful empires, medieval kingdoms, Ottoman rule and modern European history.

Today, Bulgaria is known for its ancient treasures, Orthodox traditions, mountain landscapes and rich cultural heritage. But behind its modern cities and popular tourist destinations lies a fascinating history that stretches back thousands of years.

Ancient Thracians and the First Civilizations

Long before the arrival of the Bulgarians, the lands of modern Bulgaria were inhabited by the Thracians — one of the oldest and most mysterious civilizations in Europe. The Thracians were skilled warriors, horsemen and craftsmen who lived throughout the Balkans for centuries.

Many historians believe the legendary Spartacus was of Thracian origin. The Thracians also left behind impressive gold treasures, tombs and sanctuaries that can still be visited across Bulgaria today.

Later, the region became part of the Roman Empire. Cities such as Serdica, modern Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna grew into important Roman centers with baths, amphitheaters, roads and fortresses. Even today, Roman ruins can be seen throughout Bulgaria, especially in Sofia, Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo.

The Foundation of Bulgaria in 681 AD

Modern Bulgaria was officially founded in 681 AD by Khan Asparuh, making it one of the oldest continuously existing states in Europe.

The First Bulgarian Empire quickly became one of the most powerful states in the Balkans. During the reigns of rulers such as Khan Krum and Tsar Simeon the Great, Bulgaria expanded significantly and developed strong political, military and cultural influence.

One of the most important moments in Bulgarian history came in 864 AD, when Bulgaria adopted Christianity under Tsar Boris I. Around the same period, the Cyrillic alphabet was developed in the Bulgarian cultural centers of Preslav and Ohrid by the disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

The Golden Age of Medieval Bulgaria

The reign of Tsar Simeon I during the 10th century is often described as the Golden Age of Bulgaria. During this period, Bulgarian literature, art and architecture flourished, and the country became a major cultural center in Eastern Europe.

The Bulgarian Empire reached its greatest territorial expansion, while Preslav became one of Europe’s leading medieval capitals. Many monasteries, churches and fortresses from this era helped establish Bulgaria as a major spiritual and intellectual power in the medieval world.

Ottoman Rule and the Bulgarian Revival

At the end of the 14th century, Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule for nearly 500 years. Despite the long occupation, Bulgarian language, traditions and Orthodox Christianity survived through monasteries, local communities and cultural leaders.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Bulgarian National Revival began — a powerful movement focused on education, culture and national identity. One of the most important events of this period was the April Uprising of 1876, which drew international attention to the Bulgarian struggle for freedom.

Liberation and Modern Bulgaria

Bulgaria was liberated from Ottoman rule in 1878 following the Russo-Turkish War. Soon after liberation, Sofia was chosen as the capital city of the newly restored Bulgarian state.

Throughout the 20th century, Bulgaria experienced wars, political changes and decades of communist rule after World War II. Following the fall of communism in 1989, Bulgaria transitioned toward democracy and a market economy.

Today, Bulgaria is a member of both NATO and the European Union and continues to develop as an important cultural and travel destination in Southeastern Europe.
